About Changsha

The city of Changsha and Hunan Province

Situated in the river valley along the lower part of Xiangjiang River, Changsha is the capital city of Hunan Province and also the economic, scientific and technological, educational, cultural and transportation center in Hunan. As the cradle of the ancient Chu and Xiang civilizations rooted in central China, Changsha was the hometown of many great figures in both ancient and modern history of China and among them there is the founder of new China, Chairman Mao Zedong. The city is also rich in both historical, cultural, natural tourist resources.

Orange Island:So named after the large numbers of orange trees growing here - is a narrow strip of 3-mile long sandbar in the middle of the Xiangjiang River. Here the visitor will find a pretty pavilion, a stone tablet on which is engraved a poem about the town written by Chairman Mao. From the southern end of the island there is a particularly good view of the river.

Yuelushan Mountain: To the west of the Old Town on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River, lies the 975ft high and scenically charming Yuelushan Mountain. Historically interesting monuments are scattered over its slopes. Among them, Yuelu Academy, situated at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, was one of the four ancient Chinese academies. Its predecessor can be traced back to the late Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties Period. Until 1926, Yuelu Academy was formally called Hunan University. Because the academy has survived over one thousand years, it is referred to in Chinese as a “thousand-year academy.”

Zhangjiajie National Park: Zhangjiajie City is located on the northwestern border of Hunan Province. It is famous for its abundant natural features including: mountains, forests, caves, lakes and waterfalls and perhaps there are more than three thousand rock ridges and eight hundred ghylls. Among these, the mountains cover 76 percent of the total area. The world-famous natural heritage site 'Wulingyuan Scenic Area' is located on the base of these great mountains. Sightseeing spots include Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (known as China's first national forest park), Suoxiyu Natural Resource Reserve, and Tianzi Mountain Natural Resource Reserve. It is proud to mention that the amazing scenes of planet Pandora from the famous Hollywood movie Avatar was shoot here in Zhangjiajie.
